Doumbia named Russia's player of the year

Friday, December 30, 2011 6:14 AM

CSKA Moscow forward Seydou Doumbia was named Russia's player of the year on Thursday.

The Ivory Coast international collected 591 points in an annual poll of the country's football journalists conducted by Football Weekly.

Doumbia bested Dynamo Moscow's Ukrainian international striker Andrei Voronin, who finished second in the poll with 505 points, as well as Zenit St Petersburg striker Alexander Kerzhakov, third with 129.

Doumbia is top scorer in the Russian Premier League with 24 goals from 32 matches.

His five goals in the group stage of this year's UEFA Champions League helped his side reach the last-16, where they will clash with Real Madrid for a quarter-final spot in February.

Ajax fan jailed for ´keeper assault

6:10 AM

The Ajax supporter who attacked AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado during last week's KNVB Beker clash has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The 19-year-old assailant, known only as Wesley W. during the trial, entered the field of play 36 minutes into the game at the Amsterdam ArenA and aimed a kung-fu kick at Esteban.

The goalkeeper then retaliated and, after his attacker had been restrained by security, was dismissed by referee Bas Nijhuis, much to the disgust of AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek, who ordered his players off te field, thus forcing the abandonment of the game.

Wesley W. was found guilty of "aggravated assault with premeditated malice" at an Amsterdam court on Thursday and sentenced to ten months imprisonment, with the final four months of the term suspended.

Esteban's dismissal was rescinded last week by the KNVB, which also confirmed the tie will be replayed in full behind closed doors on January 19.

Goalkeeper kicks pitch invader

Thursday, December 22, 2011 3:10 PM

Wednesday's KNVB Beker encounter between Ajax and AZ has been suspended after the

visiting team walked off the pitch following a red card for goalkeeper Esteban

Alvarado after he kicked a supporter who invaded the pitch.

An Ajax fan entered the pitch after 38 minutes of play and ran towards the AZ

goalkeeper attempting to land a kick towards the face of the Costa Rican - who

proceeded to kick the fan to the ground before again kicking him while he was on

the ground.

Onrushing stewards then intervened and took the Ajax supporter away but referee Bas

Nijhuis consequently showed the AZ keeper a straight red card for misconduct, much

to the dismay of coach Gertjan Verbeek.

Verbeek then entered the pitch and ordered his players to leave the field of play

and head for the dressing rooms.

Representatives of both sides and match officials have decided to cancel the game,

and it is yet unclear what the consequences will be for AZ or whether the fixture

will be rescheduled for a further date.

Fans riot as Colombian giants lose

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 5:47 AM

Fans of Colombian giants America de Cali reacted furiously as their team was relegated from Categoria A for the first time.

The supporters battled police and destroyed property in a riot that left 15 people injured.

The 13-time title winners will play in the second tier from 2012 after losing in a penalty shootout to Patriotas, ending their unbroken run in the top flight that stretches back to the beginning of the Colombian league system in 1948.

Supporters were furious after Saturday's defeat and began to fight riot police inside the ground before taking their grievances to the area around the Pascal Guerrero stadium.

According to police director Rodolfo Palomino, the damage from the incidents was extensive.

"We knew that in Cali the possibility of disturbances was very real. Besides the (15 people) injured, 16 establishments surrounding the Estadio Pascal Guerrero suffered damages," Palomino told Univision.

"Nine vehicles were smashed, 62 people were arrested and 42 weapons were seized."

Cali mayor Jorge Ivan Ospina condemned those involved, while showing his sympathy for fans of the club.

"The sadness is huge, the 'American' people are crying. However, this cannot be turned into an excuse for violence, aggression and intolerance," Ospina said.

America were one of the best teams in South America during the 1980s and '90s, but in recent years have struggled with poor performances on the pitch and a difficult economic situation.

FIFA has confirmed that the 2013 and 2014 editions of the tournament will be held in the north African country.

The news comes after South Africa, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) all withdrewtheir bids, leaving the north Africans as the sole bidders for the tournament.

It means Morocco will have two chances to prepare for the 2015 African Cup of Nations as well as whiichever of their clubs are defending league champions in 2013 and 2014 will get to participate in the event.

"I think it's great. It's not only great for football in Morocco, but for football in Africa," Moroccan Olympic team coach Pim Verbeek told the BBC.

Ganso wants to play a game for Barca

5:30 AM

Santos playmaker Ganso has a dream of playing one match for Barcelona.

Ganso said he would be delighted to line up with Pep Guardiola's side

just once to experience the feeling of teaming up with some 'fantastic

players'.The Brazil international locked horns with Barcelona in Sunday's Club World Cup final, but could not prevent Santos losing 4-0, and Ganso was impressed with the Catalans' performance.

"I do not aspire to move to Barcelona, but I would love to play for them for just one game," Ganso said in an interview with TV3.

"I just want to know how it feels to play with such fantastic players. They are all amazing players. (Sergio) Busquets is a superb player and so are Xavi and (Andres) Iniesta."

Marca said the Brazilian striker asked Guardiola to take him to Camp Nou when congratulating the Barca coach on their win on Sunday.

Neymar: Barcelona taught us a lesson

Monday, December 19, 2011 5:26 AM

Santos striker Neymar said Barcelona taught his side a footballing lesson in their 4-0 loss in the Club World Cup final.

Speaking to reporters after the match in Yokohama, the 19-year-old confessed that Pep Guardiola's men were superior to Santos, but feels there is no shame in bowing out to Barca.

"I don't know if Barcelona are unbeatable, but they are the best team in the world," said Neymar.

"Today, here, we learned what it is to play football."

"What we experienced in this match, we will take as a lesson. Today, Barcelona taught us how to play football."

Neymar refused to offer his analysis on the match, preferring to reflect on Santos' overall progress in the tournament.

"Now it doesn't matter what we did or didn't do," he said.

"What matters is we got here going through many battles and challenges and got to be the second best team in the world."

"Guardiola said that they lost a lot until they started winning. This is what Santos want. We lost today, but maybe in a year we can come back and be champions."

Eto'o slapped a 15-match suspension

Sunday, December 18, 2011 6:28 AM

Samuel Eto'o has been slapped with a 15-match suspension for instigating a strike within the Cameroon national team last month.

The player strike was held after officials delayed the payment of match bonuses from the LG Cup held in Morocco.

The action subsequently forced a scheduled international friendly against Algeria on November 15 to be cancelled.

Cameroon vice-captain Enoh Eyong, accused of conspiring with Eto'o, was given a two-match ban, while Tottenham's Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who has been spurning call-ups, was fined $2000.

Eto'o told reporters after the hearing that the reasons for the strike action were deeper and broader than the match bonus affair, assuring that Cameroonians would soon hear 'the whole truth' of the matter.

Newly appointed coach Denis Lavagne and his assistant Martin Ndtoungou Mpile, as well as the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) vice-president Francis Mveng were also heard by the committee.

The Algeria football federation, which is demanding 770,000 euros in damages incurred from the scrapped meeting, saluted the exemplary decision of the Fecafoot, but did not say whether it would abandon its case against the Cameroonian body.

Guti to decide future next week

Friday, December 16, 2011 6:30 AM

Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti said he will make a decision on his future during the course of the coming week.

The 35-year-old is currently without a club after terminating his contract with Turkish side Besiktas in November by mutual consent.

Despite being linked with a return to Spain, the midfielder has maintained his position that a return to La Liga is unlikely, stating his wish to play in Asia and 'learn new cultures'.

Guti revealed he has received some offers and noted that he is leaning towards an experience in Dubai.

"I have a couple of offers, one from Shanghai and another from Dubai," he told Antena3.

"Shanghai would be 10 months and Dubai just five, and I feel like spending the summer with my kids."

"I hope I will be able to announce my future next week."

Guti added that he wants to take a 'sabbatical year' after retiring, but plans to continue to be involved with football as a coach or as a director, when his break is over.

Santos in the Finals of Club World Cup

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 7:17 PM

A trio of wonderful goals were enough to keep alive Santos' dreams of lifting the 2011 Club World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Kashiwa Reysol, although the Sao Paulo side will have to play a tighter game if they are to triumph in a potential decider with Barcelona.

Neymar, Borges and Danilo all netted spectacular efforts from outside the area, but the Peixe showed an alarming lack of urgency at times; especially at the back, where inattention meant they were fortunate to concede just one goal from Hiroki Sakai.

The game started at a hectic pace, with Santos looking to go on the offensive from the first kick of the match and Reysol doing their best to contain them with an energetic pressing game. It took just four minutes for the Brazilians to threaten, however, with Neymar going within inches of opening the scoring.

The teenage sensation took advantage of slack defending by Naoya Kondo to go clean through, but his improvised shot bounced back off the post to the relief of the stranded Sugeno in goal. But there was nothing the man between the posts could do to stop the Peixe taking the lead midway through the first-half.

Perhaps inevitably, it was Neymar who did the damage. The striker received the ball on the edge of the area from Ganso, and a delicate touch left his marker prostrate and out of the game. He then released a wonderful curling shot, giving Sugeno no chance as the ball nestled in the top left corner for the game's first strike.

Just five minutes later the advantage was doubled, thanks to another inspired effort. There seemed to be little danger when Borges received a short ball from Durval; but the Brasileirao top scorer did well to open up some space and a perfectly placed effort once more left the goalkeeper with absolutely no chance. 2-0 after half an hour, and the J League champions were being overwhelmed by their opponents.

To their credit Reysol did not falter, and kept up their high-paced game pressuring Santos across the field. They came close through Jorge Wagner, who saw the goal open up for him towards the end of the half. Danilo made an excellent intervention, however, diving to divert his compatriot's effort to safety and ensure his team would go into the break with a two-goal cushion.

Santos started the second half as they did the first, seemingly in a hurry to kill off the tie. Danilo had a golden chance after Neymar's neat lay-off, but squandered his effort straight at Sugeno. Ganso's long-ranged effort also went close, but the Japanese were to have their reply seconds later.

Wagner's corner found the head of Hiroki Sakai, who took advantage of slack marking from the Santos men to angle the ball past Rafael and keep his team in the game.

Just when Reysol could see themselves make their way back against an increasingly sloppy Santos team, however, the Brazilians stepped up with another glorious strike. Danilo atoned for his earlier miss with a stinging free kick 30 metres out, which left Sugeno standing as it settled in the bottom-right corner.

The right-back was irrepressible and made another great intervention at the other end of the field, as time started to run out for Kashiwa to make an unlikely comeback. There was still life in the hosts though; Masakatsu Sawa was unlucky to see his shot rebound back off the post after some excellent approach play. Sawa then missed an incredible effort, blazing over with the goal at his mercy.

The game continued to fascinate, and Ganso almost added a fourth for Santos when his long-range strike bounced back off the bar. The Peixe progress into Sunday's final, and they will learn the identity of their opponents on Thursday after Barcelona's clash with Al Sadd.

Eto’o Wants Drogba To Join Anzhi

6:44 PM

Interesting transfer news are out and it has been revealed that Samuel Eto’o is urging Chelsea icon Didier Drogba to join him at Anzhi.

Sport Soviesti reported that the Cameroon international has asked his friend to choose a move to Anzhi when he leaves Chelsea.

The 33-year-old striker is out of contract in the summer and his future remains unclear after so far failing to agree an extension with Chelsea.

There will be no shortage of suitors for Drogba if he decides to call time on his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge and Eto’o hopes the potential riches on offer at Anzhi may tempt him into moving to Russia.

Ajax not to sell Van der Wiel

6:25 AM

Ajax interim technical director Danny Blind does not expect in-demand full-back Gregory van der Wiel to leave in the January transfer window.

The Holland international has drawn interest from across Europe and Ajax recently rebuffed a bid from Valencia because it failed to meet their valuation.

Blind is prepared for further interest before the window shuts, but has warned any deal for the 23-year-old, who has a contract until 2013, is unlikely to happen before the end of the season.

"Ajax has business as well as sporting considerations to take into account, but in the case of Gregory it is clear that in the winter he is not likely to go," Blind told www.ajax.nl.

"Coach Frank de Boer and his staff discuss will discuss this matter. We will talk to the player himself, or his agent, to find out what he wants.

"Gregory is important to this team. If Valencia or any other club want to sign him in the summer then, of course, if the price is right then it will be considered."

Blind also warned Valencia they would have to significantly increase their offer for Van der Wiel, who has also reportedly attracted the attention on Chelsea and Manchester City.

"The bid Valencia offered was too low and, in our view, showed little respect for Gregory especially given his track record and enormous potential," Blind said.

"Despite still only being 23 he has become an important part of the Ajax team and is a fixture with the Holland team that reached last year's World Cup final.

"Ideally he will remain and enjoy more good times as is possible with a player who has grown up at a club and progresses to do well in the first team."

Last week Van der Wiel revealed his desire to play for Valencia, describing the Spanish side as "a great club", but also hinted any move would not occur until the summer.

"We know that if a club a player likes wants to pay the money he wants then it is likely he will leave," Blind added.

"I currently can not say whether that will happen with Gregory. We hope not."

Aberdeen claimed an unlikely win as they beat St. Johnstone

6:08 AM

Aberdeen claimed an unlikely win on the road on Tuesday, toppling St. Johnstone 2-1 in the Scottish Premier League.

Scott Vernon's early goal gave Aberdeen inspiration with his 14th minute strike but the match did not look to be settled until Ryan Jack's second goal for the season with 11 minutes to play.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men, though, as Andrew Considine was given a second yellow card, and the momentum at McDiarmid Park swung the hosts way.

St. Johnstone threw everything at their opponents and finally claimed a goal in the first minute of injury time through Canadian Marcus Haber.

But it was too little to late as Steve Lomas' side failed to get an equaliser as Aberdeen won their first match in seven.

St. Johnstone had made an impressive start to the season and sit fourth – only behind Old Firm duo Rangers and Celtic, and Motherwell.

But they have now lost two matches on the trot and the fact both were at home will annoy manager Lomas.

Heiko Vogel is the new Basel coach

5:48 AM

Basel have appointed Heiko Vogel as coach after he guided the Swiss outfit to the Champions League knockout stage.

The former assistant had originally taken charge of Basel on an interim basis in October following Thorsten Fink's decision to leave for Bundesliga side Hamburg.

However, an unbeaten sequence of six wins in seven league matches, coupled with their 2-1 victory against Manchester United in Europe's most elite club competition has prompted the club to tie him down until 2014.

"We have been convinced of Heiko right from the beginning and given the results in the last week this is a logical step," Basel vice-president Bernhard Heusler told UEFA.com on Tuesday.

Basel are seven points clear at the top of the Swiss Super League and will discover their opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League on Friday.

Eight suspects in a major match-fixing case in Turkey

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 5:49 PM

A Turkish court freed eight suspects in a major match-fixing case, including the coach and an executive of Besiktas, media reported, giving a boost to soccer club shares which have been hit hard by the investigation.

Besiktas coach Tayfur Havutcu, executive Serdal Adali and the other six were released from custody pending trial, media reports said. Twenty-three suspects remain in custody.

Shares in Besiktas surged 10.7 percent on the news, while Fenerbahce rose 5.6 percent. Shares in Galatasaray, who are not named in the match-fixing indictment, jumped 8.4 percent.

The Turkish parliament passed a law at the weekend reducing prison sentences for match-rigging from a maximum 12 years to three years, defying a call from President Abdullah Gul for MPs to revise a law which he vetoed earlier this month.

Gul, who is now obliged to approve the legislation, had said the new law did not represent a sufficient deterrent and had encouraged the view that it was passed to benefit certain individuals.

A total of 93 soccer officials and players, including the chairman of champions Fenerbahce, Aziz Yildirim, are set to go on trial in the investigation, according to the indictment which the court accepted last week.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has said it will act quickly in taking measures concerning individuals named in the case but it will not act against clubs until the season is over. It barred Fenerbahce from this season`s Champions League when the allegations first surfaced.

Among the defendants is a TFF deputy chairman, Goksel Gumusdag. European football`s ruling body UEFA has yet to comment on the latest developments in the case.

The first hearing is set for February 14.

Olgun Peker, an ex-president of club Giresunspor, and Yildirim are accused of being gang leaders among a raft of charges ranging from match-fixing to the payment of bribes.

The indictment names eight clubs, including Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Trabzonspor, who are currently in the Europa League after replacing Fenerbahce in this season`s Champions League. Fourteen players are among the defendants.

The investigation alleged manipulation in 19 matches, including Fenerbahce`s 4-3 victory over Sivasspor which won the league championship on the final day of last season.

UEFA fined 12,700 pounds to Celtic

5:30 AM

Celtic have been fined 12,700 pounds by UEFA after the club's supporters engaged in 'illicit chanting' during a 3-1 win over Rennes.

The Scottish Premier League club were charged following a complaint to the UEFA match delegate from the Strathclyde Police match commander.

A section of the Celtic support reportedly engaged in pro-IRA chanting during the Europa League match at Celtic Park on November 3.

Celtic escaped punishment from the SPL over a similar incident during a home match against Hibernian on October 29.

On that occasion, Scottish football authorities ruled the club were taking all possible action to cut out any 'unacceptable conduct'.

However, UEFA have proven to be less lenient.

European football's governing body has also fined Glasgow Rangers on no fewer than three occasions in the past over similar incidents.

Harry Kewell fit for Saturday's clash

Friday, December 9, 2011 11:44 AM

Melbourne Victory assistant coach Kevin Muscat has declared Harry Kewell fit for Saturday's clash with Adelaide United at Etihad Stadium.

Kewell was rested from the Victory's midweek friendly against the Los Angeles Galaxy to keep him primed to take on Victory's bitter rivals Adelaide, according to the former Victory centre-back.

"Everyone wanted to play and Harry was no different, but there was three or four in a group that we decided it would be best if they don't play," Muscat said.

"Harry wasn't isolated, there were three or four others, but it just seems that everyone wants to ask why he wasn't playing."

"It was great to have the Galaxy here, but tomorrow night is the most important game for us this week."

While Muscat conceded their preparation for the A-League clash had been disrupted by the arrival of David Beckham's LA Galaxy, he said the Victory have been playing better than last week's 3-1 loss to Newcastle Jets suggests.

"I'm not going to look for excuses, but I don't think the scoreline told the true story of the game, but the reality is we got beat," Muscat said.

"We had an opportunity to go on and win that game and we didn't."

"We've learned a few things from that game."

"The last two performances have been relatively good and it's about consolidating and turning performances into results now because we're a third of the way through the season and it's imperative that we start picking up points."

Muscat said he is expecting United to rebound strongly from last week's 4-0 humiliation against the Central Coast Mariners.

"It's our biggest game so far because it's the next one," said Muscat.

"Three points is vital, but not only for ourselves."

"If you look at the cluster of teams in and around ourselves, two or three wins on the bounce could really set up your season and we want that bounce of two or three wins to start now."

Trezeguet quits UAE after two games

8:10 AM

Former France international David Trezeguet has left United Arab Emirates side Bani Yas after just two appearances citing a persistent thigh injury.

Trezeguet, 34, joined the UAE Pro League runners-up in August on a one-year deal after leaving Spanish club Hercules.

However, a long-standing thigh problem hindered Trezeguet, who has now been released from his contract.

In quotes appearing on the Asian Confederation website, Bani Yas head coach Gabriel Calderon said: "David is a good person and I have a lot of respect for him because he was a big player.

"But I let him go. I told him to go. David did not want to be here and I do not want unhappy players at the club. It was best for everyone that he has gone.''

Trezeguet was once one of Europe's most feared striker, scoring 171 goals during a decade at Juventus and winning both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, scoring a golden goal winner in the latter.

FBI launched investigation on USA's failed 2022 WC bid

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 6:25 PM

The FBI has launched an investigation into alleged corruption following the USA's failed 2022 World Cup bid.

It is believed the FBI holds 'substantial evidence' of outside organisations attempting to hack into the email accounts of members of the USA's 2022 World Cup bid.

The central point of the FBI's interest in the investigation are alleged bribery payments made to FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer.

The American, a committee member since 1996, is believed to have received commission payments totaling more than $US500,000.

Blazer did not deny the payments, saying at the time: "All of my transactions have been legally and properly done, in compliance with the various laws of the applicable jurisdictions based on the nature of the transaction."

Members of England's failed 2018 World Cup bid were interviewed last month, although they are not believed to be under suspicion.

It has also been reported that the FBI are investigating the alleged bribery of Mohammed Bin Hammam, who stood against Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency.

Bin Hammam was found to have offered $US40,000 bribes to three Caribbean football officials, just three weeks before the election and has since been banned from FIFA for life, with a further 16 Caribbean football officials being sanctioned for their part in the Trinidad meeting.

Another committee member under the spotlight is Thai Worawi Makudi. Makudi is alleged to have used money from FIFA's GOAL project to build facilities on land owned by him.

Blatter, who has been head of the organisation for the past 13 years, had planned to publish Swiss court papers that detailed bribes received by FIFA officials from the collapsed sports rights and marketing agency ISL.

FIFA are said to have been keen to publish the documents since the court action against the officials, who have since been named as former FIFA president Joao Havelange and executive committee member Ricardo Teixeira.

However, FIFA have been forced to delay the publication, following legal objections from one of the parties. Despite the delay, Blatter remains fully committed to publishing the documents as soon as possible.

"It was my strong will to make the ISL file fully transparent," he said.

"I have now been advised that as a result of the objection of a third party to such transparency it will take more time to overcome the respective legal hurdles."

"This does not change my stance at all. I remain fully committed to publishing the files as soon as possible as an important part of my many reform plans for FIFA, which include handling the past as well as preparing the future structure of the organisation."
